Archives For Dancers

Saturday morning (July 7) is your chance to dance like no one is watching in front of 19,911 fans as a Nu Skin Jazz Dancer. Every single one of you who stood out in the cold to audition for So You Think You Can Dance better be at the Jazz practice facility tomorrow all ready to dance for your lives. I’m going to be incredibly disappointed if there aren’t at least ten world-class Latin ballroom performers from Utah County. Or somebody who mimics this routine.

Registration begins at 8AM at the Zions Bank Basketball Center (1414 South 500 West in SLC) and tryouts begin at 9AM. I think you can pre-register at utahjazz.com/dancers.

Here’s the rest of the information:

Additional Details: All applicants must be high school graduates and at least 18 years of age by July 7. They must be energetic, motivated and committed, and also be in top physical condition.

An open call for auditions will be held on Saturday, July 7, and a judging panel will make an initial set of cuts. Semifinalists will then be invited to rehearse choreography with dance team director Jan Whittaker on Monday-Wednesday, July 9-11 at Zions Bank Basketball Center. The group of semifinalists will then be pared to a list of finalists who will be invited to participate in a final interview and audition session with a judging panel on Saturday, July 14. Those chosen to the 2012-13 Nu Skin Jazz Dance Team will be posted on utahjazz.com in the evening of July 14.

About the Nu Skin Jazz Dancers
Started prior to the 1992-93 season, the Nu Skin Jazz Dancers provide an exciting entertainment element to Utah Jazz basketball games. They perform a minimum of two times per game and practice twice weekly for four hours at a time. Their dance style is athletic and energetic. They perform a variety of jazz, lyrical, funk and character-type dance routines.

In addition to performing at Jazz home games, the Nu Skin Jazz Dancers make community and charity appearances, including school assemblies, hospital visits and fundraising events. The Nu Skin Jazz Dancers have a wealth of dancing experience and a wide-variety of career goals and interests.

So, you may recall that during the last Jazz home playoff game there was a little problem with the dance team that resulted in the Nu Skin Dancers only performing limited routines as well as rumors that maybe the dance team would be eliminated altogether.

Well, apparently the days of #dancergate are behind us. Not only are the Jazz holding dancer tryouts for next season, today they announced a trip to China for six lucky ones from last year’s squad.

Here’s the press release:

SALT LAKE CITY (June 8, 2012) – The Nu Skin Jazz Dancers are visiting Shanghai and Guangzhou, China, from June 6 – June 18 in conjunction with Shanghai Citizens’ Game Opening Ceremony on June 10. The opening ceremony will be livecast globally by Greatsports Channel and Dragon TV.

The Nu Skin Jazz Dancers will also perform and sign autographs from June 16-17 at NBA Nation, China’s largest outdoor NBA grassroots event.

NBA Nation is a celebration of basketball and NBA’s natural association to lifestyle, music, fashion, technology and popular culture, for all ages. NBA Nation is a basketball and entertainment playground featuring a host of basketball activities and lifestyle elements. Fans of all ages will have the opportunity to shoot, slam, dribble and drive on the two full size half courts and participate in a series of Measure Up activities such as Tall and Short, Arm Span, Get-a-Grip and as well as the NBA video games corner.
