On this week’s episode of the Salt City Hoops Podcast, we talk about the FIBA World Cup thus far. We lead off by talking about Team USA’s performance… while they’ve won all of their games with large margins, they haven’t looked impressive at times. How good is this Team USA? Then, we break down the Jazz players: Ante Tomic, Raul Neto, Dante Exum, and Rudy Gobert and how they’ve looked in their tournament play. Finally, as always, it’s Crazy Trade Idea of the Week time: The Jazz get Jabari Parker! All that and more on this week’s podcast.

On this week’s episode of the Salt City Hoops Podcast, Andy Larsen and Ben Dowsett are joined by Salt City Hoops writer David J. Smith as they discuss the great era of Utah Jazz history. We look at some big questions: how good was that team, analytically? What made John Stockton, Karl Malone, and Jeff Hornacek special? How does their style of basketball hold up today? Could it have been improved upon? Ben even suggests a Crazy Trade Idea of the Week from 1986.

On this edition of the Salt City Hoops Podcast, we talk about refereeing. Ref decisions make a large impact on every game, but are often written off as a too difficult to control. On the podcast, we talk to two experts who have studied NBA refereeing.

Our first guest is John Ball, proprietor of the @RefAnalytics Twitter account. He published a paper in this year’s Sloan Sports Analytics Conference detailing the differences between certain NBA refs and how they call the game. We talk with him about his findings, and how an NBA team might use the information he found to gain an advantage.

Then, we bring on Brett Crane, better known as @bjcseven to talk about his work charting Jazz games specifically. Are there any referees who are biased for or against the Jazz? Do refs make different calls? And why is Zach Zarba his favorite ref anyway? All that, plus a Crazy Trade Idea of the Week, on this week’s podcast!

On this week’s episode, we invite members from around the Jazz community to share their A-F grades of the Jazz’s offseason thus far. We’re joined by:

  • Laura Thompson, writer for Salt City Hoops, can be found @hoopslaureate on Twitter.
  • Jon Oglesby, who covers the Jazz for KSL.com and is the voice of University of Utah baseball, softball, and volleyball.
  • Jimbo Rudding, new mailbag host for Salt City Hoops, host of the Utah Jazz Podcast, and owner of the fantastic @JimboRudding account.
  • Trevor Allen, ESPN700 Producer and @ESPN700Trevor on Twitter.
  • And Clark Schmutz, writer for SLCDunk and former co-host of the Clark and Andy Show.

After getting their offseason grades, co-host Ben Dowsett and Andy add their own grades. Finally, we wrap up with the Crazy Trade Idea of the Week. Spencer, Justin, Jeff, and Angie get together for a throwback podcast.

In the NBA doldrums of August, we’re kicking it back to 2012 here at Salt City Hoops! This weekend, Salt City Hoops founder Spencer Hall, former SCH contributors Jeff Lind and Justin Davies and newcomer Angie Treasure got together and recorded a podcast to celebrate what once was.  The dream team discusses the “New Gordon Hayward”, the Jazz’s Summer League experience, and much more! Spencer recommends the podcast with his highest endorsement, saying “The sound quality is super poor and the insights are even worse.”

We also invite Dean Demakis, of DeanonDraft.com, to give his input on what he’s seen of the Jazz’s prospects. Has Dante Exum impressed or disappointed thus far? What about Jabari Parker? Finally, he gives us some names with rising stocks and some with falling stocks from their summer league showings.

On this episode of the Salt City Hoops Podcast from the ESPN700 studios, Andy Larsen is joined by Clint Johnson in a discussion of all of the things going on in Jazzland. First, we talk about Gordon Hayward’s max offer sheet. Clint has significant reservations about signing Hayward. In particular, how will he perform under the spotlight of a max deal?

Then, Salt City Hoops founder Spencer Hall joins us on the program. Spencer was the original Summer League blogger, posting about the Rocky Mountain Revue and the Vegas Summer League for FreeDarko. We talk about the history of the summer league, some of the anecdotes of the old days in SLC and Vegas, and look forward to this year’s summer league. We also talk about the fan turnout at yesterday’s summer league practice.

Finally, it’s time for the Crazy Trade Idea of the Week. This idea comes from the JazzFanz message boards. Could Carlos Boozer return to the Utah Jazz? All that and more on this week’s show!
