If he improves at all this season, he would have demanded near a max money deal next summer. If his season is on par to previous seasons with similar PER 36 stats to 2012-13, he will be locked up in an average market value contract similar to other bigs around the league which Utah can use in a future trade if desired.

Even if Favors’ offense doesn’t improve much, he will earn his contract if he can become one of the league’s elite defensive players. As interesting is what Favors’ extension means for Hayward. If he can be signed for around $40 million, then I’m for it. But it would be prudent for the Jazz to have a few quality players (e.g., Hayward, Kanter) on their rookie contracts should it want to trade up in next year’s draft.
